this other story, there's been a lot of discussion about guns in schools, and guns in general after the sandy hook sad situation in december in connecticut. and now there's a kindergarten girl who apparently owns one of these little devices, you look at the screen at hello kitty bubble gun. apparently, she was talking about this toy at school. it's my understanding she actually didn't even have the toy with her at the mt. carmel area school in pennsylvania. as a result of just talking about shooting bubbles at one another, apparently she received a ten-day suspension. it was reduced to two days, but that's kind of unclear now whether or not she should even have faced any kind of suspensi suspension. >> steve: well, this is kind of crazy the two five-year-old girls were waiting at the bus, hey, i'm going to shoot you with my hello kitty bubble machine and somebody overheard it and next thing you know, just because people are, you know, freaked out about guns since sandy hook, the school got involved. and she was suspended for ten days, and then reduced it to two. but she was also given, becaus

to get that included in the senate version of the sandy supplemental that passed on december 28th. we were unable to get that included in the house version. this is not new money. first and foremost i would appreciate this committee working with the counterpart to give us this transfer authority. otherwise we are going to be behind the curve again. secondly i think it's important to change the laws about best value contracting versus lowest price technically qualified. by statute the state department guard contracts in dangerous places like libya and everywhere except iraq and afghanistan must be awarded using a lowest price technically acceptable selection process. we have requested a change in the legislation that would allow us to use some discretion to try to deal with the varieties of the local guard forces. we currently have it in afghanistan and pakistan, but it's going to expire. that's something else that i would ask the committee to look into. finally the point that the chairman made and you echoed, congressman, an authorization, i was on the armed serf service committee. it

's causing some real problems for victims of super storm sandy. believe it or not, some of those folks still have no heat, no power in their homes. including this man in new jersey who has yet to receive any aid and is now living in a trailer next to his house. authorities in several american states are already blaming the weather for multiple deaths. schools are closed all over the place. commuter trains and subways jammed. and let's not forget about the frozen pipes and the water mains. take a look at this. chicago firefighters before dawn had to battle a warehouse fire. one of the biggest they have had in years. but the water froze right on to the side of the building. the conditions so bad, look at this. a third of the department had to help put it out. they even had to bring in empty city buss so firefighters with frozen gloves like this guy had a place to try to get out of cold. incredible. steve brown our chicago-based correspondent with more on the deep freeze. the number of deaths appears to be rising tonight. >> yeah. we're across the street from that warehouse fire that you mentio

on that. we had the big sandy relief bill, $60 billion of mostly pork barrel spending, republicans blinked on that. now we have the debt kraoerblgs it looks like the president will get his way on that at least for now. i've been in washington for a longtime, 25 years covering the debt deals and the budget deals. what is frustrating about this is that the only time i can recall over the last 25 years congress has had to get serious about cutting spending and reducing the deficit is when they are at the point of this debt ceiling, and the president says we don't want to use that any more as a kind of point of emphasis, and i think that is a mistake, because what it means is we're never going to get serious about the debt unless we use the debt ceiling as that point where we make a deal to reduce the spending. martha: very distressing. matt, steve, thank you very much, guys. we'll see where this goes. we'll see you soon. >> thanks. >> thank you, martha. bill: 13 minutes before the hour and just about everyone is watching their taxes go higher. why is a famous protkpwoefrl and a pretty good on
